Chess Problem 1997f1c601

BDS & Allan Bell

feenschach, 1997

(b) bPd7->d5

a) 1.Bxa4 Kf2 2.Bb5 Sb4#
b) 1.Rh6  Bf2 2.Rf6 Sxe5#

In each solution a black piece moves to interfere with another black piece. White’s moves in each solution are differently motivated – in (a) to avoid a pin of the mating piece and in (b) to shield the white king from an upcoming check. This difference is one flaw. Another flaw is the lack of any great interplay between Black and White.
