The Problemist Supplement, 1995 (Dedicated to Colin Russ)

5.Sc8+ Ka8 6.Qa7+ Rxa7 7.Sb6#

The well-known smothered mate, rotated through ninety degrees. I composed this problem during the Isle of Man Chess Congress in 1995, where several of the players attempted to solve it. The only one who I knew succeeded was Tony Miles and he took just a few minutes.

The dedication is to Colin Russ, then secretary of the BCPS, who was going through a trying time just then.
