The well-known smothered mate, rotated through ninety degrees. I composed this problem during the Isle of Man Chess Congress in 1995, where several of the players attempted to solve it. The only one who I knew succeeded was Tony Miles and he took just a few minutes.
The dedication is to Colin Russ, then secretary of the BCPS, who was going through a trying time just then.
